Well the seed of the idea to go on a road trip of the U.S.A. germinated with friends in the Philippines in 2009. It seemed like a good way to make the most of our ‘long service leave’. So we thought about it, talked about it, researched routes on the internet; our idea kept forming and transforming.Initially, the idea was to travel by RV from Los Angeles north to Anchorage in Alaska, south to Mexico City, east to New Orleans, north to Winnipeg, across to Maine, down the east coast to Florida and return to Los Angeles. That was some 21000 miles or 33000 kilometres and probably nearly impossible in our four and a half months of long service leave.Cutting back the route, we planned to travel from Los Angeles to New Orleans for the Jazz Festival at the end of April. Then continue to Miami, up the east coast through the Smokey Mountains to Washington DC, New York, Maine, west to Quebec, Niagara Falls, Glacier National Park in Montana, and finally down the west coast through the national parks: Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Arches, Zion, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. After researching camping grounds and calculating 11,964 miles of travel, we still felt exhausted by the thought of so many miles in too short a time.Yes, there is another plan: arrive San Francisco, pick up our RV, travel to Yosemite National Park, onto Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and through some smaller towns and camping grounds to New Orleans for the Jazz and Heritage Festival at the end of April. We will head east to Miami, Fort Clinch National Park, and north west to Nashville, through the Smokey Mountains toWashington DC. The next places on our route are Niagara Falls, Quebec, Arcadia NP in Maine, with our road journey finishing in Boston. That will leave us a week in New York City, before flying to Amsterdam to spend a month with family. Our flight home to Australia will include a stop over in Singapore for 3 nights. This latest road travel plan comprises approximately 5,855 miles of road travel in the USA, over a period of 68 days, between April and June 2011.

Hi Cheryl – the flight was excellent. It left a bit late but fairly smooth and Robert and son number 2 – Monte was there to meet us. it is great being with family in LA. Lots of laughs, a bit of reminiscing and good food topped off with beautiful Californian weather. Thank you also for your telephone call – appreciated our chat before we left … cheers and love XO

Hi Carol,I am trying to catch up with my blogging – there has been a lot happening but I have a little time now that we are in New Orleans, although there is always music beckoning… you would love the colour and excitement of the streets here. And we seem to be in the middle of some movie making – 21 Jump Street is the rumour. We did experience some strong winds particularly while staying over night in Texas in the Walmart Park! And the dust was bad while driving out there but nothing as bad as those unfortunate people had in Alabama. and love to Zack, Greg and you,
Cheers and love
Sue and Marty xx

Dear Suzie, I did write a note before on your blog, hope i managed to do the right thing so you know I am thinking of you. I am enjoying the photos so much and the stories that go with them, you are doing a wonderful job. It looks fabulous what you are both doing, what a fantastic trip. Continue to be safe and enjoy. Love Helen xxx
Hi Helen,
What you did was perfect! It is so good to hear from good friends from home so thank you! I have just been a bit slow in responding. Sometimes life is busy on the road too..
We are in Jacksonville, Florida at the moment – quite close to Atlantic Beach – the beach is long and very wide especially when the tide is out – much wider than our beach on the Gold Coast and at low tide it is great for a long walk. Anyway I am going to try to do some updating of this website now.
lots of love
Suzie
Hi Susanne
Just had a peep at your blog for the frst time…what a neat way of recording a trip. Was looking through the New Orleans section. It looks and sounds just as I would imagine. Saw a prog on tv a week or so ago here on slavery in the South and one of the plantations featured was Oak Alley … looks magnificent.
I guess you are about to head off to Europe .. safe journey & continue the fun!
Hugs
Peter
Hi Peter,
Great to hear from you! Yes we only have one more week in the RV – I think we will miss this ‘nomadic lifestyle” we’ve slowed down a bit and we’re just appreciating the forest walks, the time to sit around a campfire, time to read, siestas and not doing much really. I guess New York City will change all of that next week! Really looking forward to exploring and visiting the Galleries and I’ve booked to see ‘Memphis’, a show on Broadway which should be some fun.
Thanks for your best wishes – hope all is well with you. I’ll look forward to catching up when I get back.
You take care
